The Welwyn Hatfield Netball League celebrated the end of the Winter Season by hosting a charity fundraising tournament on Saturday 24th April. The tournament was organized by 2nd Division team Trios who raised over £1000.00 for the British Heart Foundation their chosen charity in memory of Lianne Gould, a close friend of all team mates. Lianne died a few years ago from a rare heart condition and was nicknamed ‘Trio’ so her friends set up their netball team, Trios in her memory. The tournament rules were based on all teams playing out of position and in a fancy dress theme starting with the first letter of their team name. The best dressed prize went to Laban Dodgers Ruby’s attending the tournament as Robbers! Hatfield Magpies won the event beating Abbey Flyers in the final.
The end of season presentation evening was held on the day at the Collingwood Suite at Gosling Sports Park featuring live band ‘Red Diesel’. Congratulations to 1st Division winners Hatfield Magpies who will now go forward and trial for Herts League. The committee was delighted that Pat Bailey was able to attend to present the ‘Lisa Bailey Memorial’ trophies to all Young Players of the Year in each division. Pat’s daughter Lisa sadly passed away in 2001 and was a keen netballer. 1st Division team Harlequins started the award in 2002 in memory of Lisa and this award has been prominent within the league ever since.
The Summer League will be starting on 7th June at Stanborough School on Monday evenings and is a great opportunity to get back into netball. For more information please contact the league by email: welwyn_hatfield_nl@yahoo.co.uk or visit their website: www.whnl.co.uk .
